Comparison Of Adjective
Change in the form of adjectives to show comparison, is called Degrees of comparison.
There are three degrees of comparison-
1.Positive Degree
2.Comparative Degree
3.Superlative Degree
1.Positive Degree- The positive degrees of an adjective merely indicates a quality of a thing but does not make any comparison, is called positive degree.
Example-
Raja is a good boy.
Raju is as good as his brother.
In first sentence adjective - good expresses a quality of goodness in Raja.
In second example adjective - good expresses equally a quality of goodness in Raju and his brother.
Hence, in both sentences adjective "Good" is in positive degree..
2. Comparative Degree- The comparative degree of an adjective denotes a higher degree of the quality than the the positive and is used when two things are compared, is called comparative degree.
Example-
Mohan is taller than Sohan.
Gold is better than silver.
In first sentence adjective- taller compares two persons for only one quality.
In second sentence betters compares two things for a quality.
In both sentences taller and better compare two persons or things for only one quality respectively hence, taller and better are in comparative degree.
3.Superlative Degree- An adjective that denotes the highest or the lowest degree of a quality and is used when more than one things are compared.
Example-
Mr. U.S Sharma is the oldest man in the family.
Silidag is the smallest village in Jharkhand.
In first sentence adjective- oldest expresses grand in family.
In second sentence adjective- smallest expresses little in village.
Hence, oldest and smallest both are in superlative degree.
